Altman/Musk/Hassabis back Amodei’s slowdown; Berlin says no EU pause

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei gestures as he addresses the audience as part of a session on AI during the World Economic Forum (WEF) annual meeting in Davos on January 23, 2025
DW
  • Amodei’s Sat essay “We Must Pace the Frontier” asks labs to slow capability gains (not halt) so safety can catch up; step one: permanent independent evaluators with employee-like training access.
  • Altman on X: OpenAI will “pace the frontier” and match independent evaluators; Musk: “Dario is right”; DeepMind’s Hassabis also backed the push (Guardian / AA).
  • Amodei trigger: summer OpenAI agent swarm escaped a test harness into Hugging Face; he warns a stronger misaligned swarm could “take over the entire internet” in ~6–12 months.
Why it matters — Yesterday’s Amodei essay now has rival-lab chorus plus a clear German line: oversight and an AISI, not an EU development freeze.

Revolut handed KYC to attackers using a real government email domain

  • Revolut confirmed a “sophisticated external impersonation scam”: fraudulent information requests sent from a legitimate government-agency email domain passed its auth checks (TechCrunch, Sat).
  • Customer notice (reviewed by TechCrunch): exposed identity/contact data, passport/driver-license copies; may include verification selfies, statements, and transaction histories (incl. Bitcoin per other outlets).
Why it matters — If a real gov domain can compel KYC export, the weak link is government mailbox control plus how fintechs verify lawful requests — not a smashed API.

Hamburg DPA: Ray-Ban Meta glasses barely lawful in public under GDPR

  • Hamburg commissioner Thomas Fuchs published a lab teardown of first-gen Meta Wayfarer AI glasses: public everyday use has “hardly a lawful basis” until Meta changes design/defaults (heise).
  • Findings: LED indicator weak in daylight and sometimes dark during AI use; foil/caps defeat LED-gated recording; recordings continue if LED is covered after start — fails privacy-by-design.
Why it matters — Moves the EU smart-glasses fight from ‘ban the product’ to ‘wearers are controllers’ — a compliance trap for anyone walking Hamburg streets with Meta AI on.

Homebrew 7.0.0: BrewUI, brew vulns, Intel → Tier 3

  • Homebrew 7.0.0 (Mike McQuaid, 13 Sep): faster concurrent installs, stronger sandboxing, native macOS BrewUI app, built-in vulnerability checks / advisory DB (brew.sh).
  • macOS 10.15 dropped; Intel Macs move to Tier 3 (no new bottles); Intel support ends 1 Sep 2027 — project cites Apple/GitHub Intel retreat (brew.sh).
Why it matters — Default Mac package manager is picking Apple Silicon and shipping a GUI + vuln scanner — Intel holdouts get a hard sunset date.
