Oil Gains on Report Trump May Order Iran Strikes Before Midterms

  • The Atlantic, citing two officials, reports the White House asked the Pentagon for Iran strike options that could be carried out before November’s midterms. Size, targets and whether to go ahead are still being debated.
  • Brent climbed above $102 and WTI traded near $90 (Bloomberg). Hurricane Isaias also shut in over 510,000 barrels a day of Gulf of Mexico output, about a quarter of the region’s supply.
  • A tanker off Qatar’s northern tip was hit “by multiple projectiles”, the first reported attack deep inside the Gulf in about a month (UKMTO). An IRGC adviser says Iran will close the southern route along Oman’s coast that ships use to get around its blockade.
Why it matters — This morning’s story was the Fed and yields; by lunch, oil and war risk are back on top. As long as both stay high, CMC Markets’ Andreas Lipkow expects investors to stay away from bigger stock purchases.

Drones knock out a Yandex data center; a Russian strike on a bus in Kramatorsk kills at least 30

  • A drone attack set fire to Yandex’s data center in Sasovo, Ryazan region; the site has stopped operating entirely and some services may be unavailable, the company told CNBC. Reuters calls it the first major attack on a Russian data hub.
  • Yandex says core consumer services were not affected and there were no casualties; Yandex Cloud reported power problems in one zone and told customers to switch zones. Ukraine has not claimed the attack.
Why it matters — Data centers are now on the target list alongside refineries, and Yandex runs Russia’s main search engine and its leading AI model, YandexGPT.

Galeria’s fourth insolvency in six years widens to its restaurants; Braunschweig store among those affected

  • Galeria filed at Düsseldorf district court last Friday, its fourth insolvency in six years. Frank Kebekus, who handled the 2020 and 2022 cases, is the provisional administrator. About 12,000 people work in its 83 stores (NDR).
  • Two more filings now cover the restaurant and food-hall subsidiaries, affecting around 2,000 employees (RP Online). Galeria runs 36 restaurants nationwide.

  • The new report covers nearly 36,000 populations of more than 5,000 vertebrate species, which WWF calls the largest such database yet. Freshwater populations are down 85%, land 69%, marine 59%.
  • Losses are steepest in the tropics: −95% in Latin America and the Caribbean and −80% in Africa between 1970 and 2022, against −23% in Europe and Central Asia.
